San Juan Capistrano, CA – The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is set to carry out an enforcement operation aimed at curbing distracted driving on April 24. The operation, taking place between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m., will target drivers suspected of disregarding the hands-free cell phone law.

Under the current regulation, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or any electronic device while operating a vehicle. Activities such as talking, texting, or using applications are included in this prohibition. Driving while using a handheld cell phone incurs a fine. Additionally, a second violation within 36 months leads to a point being added to the driver’s record.

Sgt. Kyle Ishii remarked, “A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone. That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”

Motorists are advised to pull over safely if they need to make an important call or enter directions into a device. Prior to starting a drive, it is recommended to either silence the phone or place it out of reach.
