Reps. Young Kim and Andrew Garbarino, co-chairs of the SALT Caucus, have expressed dissatisfaction with a recent proposal from the Ways and Means Committee regarding the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap. The committee reportedly suggested a $30,000 cap, which has not been well-received by the caucus leaders.
In their statement, Reps. Kim and Garbarino highlighted their ongoing efforts to engage in discussions with both the Ways and Means Committee and House leadership over the past year. They noted that despite their attempts to negotiate in good faith, “House and Committee leadership waited until the eleventh hour to leak a number that they know does not provide the relief our constituents desperately need.”
The representatives emphasized that no agreement has been reached on this proposal. They criticized the approach taken by committee Republicans, suggesting it is more of an obstacle than a solution for taxpayers. “This isn’t an offer — it’s a slap in the face to the hardworking taxpayers we represent,” they stated.
Reps. Kim and Garbarino remain focused on achieving what they consider a fair deal for those affected by SALT deductions. They reiterated their commitment to securing beneficial terms for their constituents as part of broader Republican objectives in Congress.
