Today, Congressman Darrell Issa from California’s 48th district presented his case before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He advocated for support on legislation aimed at blocking a proposed mileage tax on American drivers. The proposal, known as the No Track, No Tax Act, seeks to prevent both the imposition of a tax on each mile driven by Americans and the use of devices designed to track those distances.
Issa expressed his concerns during his testimony, stating, “The establishment of a mileage tax is more than an attack on the freedom to drive. It targets those who need to drive the most for work, school, and on behalf of their families.” He further warned about privacy issues related to tracking devices: “Even worse, the mileage tax is only enabled by a mileage tracker – a device that shadows drivers and captures everywhere they go. The potential for abuse and the exposure of personal data may be limitless.”
Although the San Diego Regional Transportation Agency has decided not to pursue this tax plan, California’s state government in Sacramento is still considering it at a statewide level. Additionally, federal pilot projects indicate that many communities are exploring similar taxation strategies.
