U.S. Representatives Young Kim of California and Nikema Williams of Georgia have introduced a new bipartisan bill, the Medicare Economic Security Solutions Act, aimed at reducing costs for seniors by capping late enrollment fees for Medicare.

Currently, seniors who delay enrolling in Medicare may face increased charges due to late enrollment penalties. The proposed legislation seeks to limit both the amount and duration of these fees for those enrolling late in Medicare Part B. Additionally, it plans to remove penalties for individuals using COBRA, retiree benefits, or Veterans Affairs (VA) services who postpone their Medicare coverage.

Rep. Kim had previously co-led this initiative during the 118th Congress. She stated, “Seniors shouldn’t be punished for working later in life. Unfortunately, Americans can face higher fees for delaying Medicare enrollment.” She emphasized that the act aims to alleviate what she described as “unnecessary, burdensome fees” impacting seniors on fixed incomes.

Congresswoman Williams echoed these sentiments, highlighting the confusion many seniors face regarding Medicare enrollment deadlines: “Seniors in Georgia’s Fighting Fifth and across the country are finding themselves hit with surprise fees simply because they didn’t know all the rules about signing up for Medicare.” She added that the bill is designed to protect seniors and ensure they receive necessary care without facing undue financial penalties.
